Royal School serves over 56,000 meals every month, and the content of those meals has low nutritional value. We are taking steps to improve the diet and overall sustainability of the school by adding some new campus residents: chickens!
Chicken eggs are a perpetual source of high-protein food, easy to sustain and cost-effective. In fact, if the chickens are able to produce more eggs than are required to sustain the student population, the school might have their first independent revenue stream! In October of 2011, our partner Pennies for Posho will be funding and constructing a 1,000-bird house that should render approximately 750 eggs per day.
In addition to the eggs themselves, we will be harvesting the chicken manure. This highly valuable fertilizer will allow us to proceed with the construction of on-campus "shade houses" that will mass produce spinach, tomatoes and other nutritious vegetables. By introducing eggs and vegetables into the Royal School food program, we will be drastically improving the health of our students.
